DeBartolos Donate $2.5 Million for COVID-19 Care at TGH

TAMPA -- One of Tampa's wealthiest couples is making a donation to help Tampa General Hospital deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Eddie and Candy DeBartolo have given TGH $2.5 million dollars to help treat Tampa Bay area patients diagnosed with novel coronavirus and other infectious diseases. TGH says in a news release that the money will be used to develop a dedicated COVID-19 unit with a special area for diagnosis and treatment. The money also goes to construction of negative pressure isolation rooms and the acquisition of ventilators. The hospital says a timeline to open the facility hasn't been set.

Other uses for the money include an isolation area in the emergency room for COVID-19 patients.

The DeBartolos have given more than $7.5 million to TGH in recent months.

DeBartolo, former owner of the NFL's San Francisco 49ers, has been involved in a number of charitable initiatives since moving to Tampa, including a charter school partnership with retired Buccaneer and fellow pro football hall of famer Derrick Brooks. He was pardoned by President Trump earlier this year, for a conviction involving a corruption probe into Louisiana's governor.
