Video Shows Dog Attacking Police Horse During Tampa's Gasparilla

TAMPA -- Hillsborough sheriff Chad Chronister says surveillance video of the seconds leading up to the police-involved shooting of a pit bull during the Gasparilla parade confirms what mounted deputies reported... that the dog was attacking police horses.

HCSO says the video, recorded looking down Bayshore Boulevard near Tampa General Hospital, shows the 70-pound dog charging several times at a herd of law enforcement horses, trying to bite one of the horses in the sheath and successfully biting a horse in the lower leg. Deputy Crystal McClelland, who was riding another horse, shot the dog once in the back. It died at the scene.

HCSO says the pit bull's owner, a homeless man, was nearby but made no effort to control his animal. He was arrested and Baker Acted after deputies say he made threatening statements. Deputies said they found a knife on the man.
