The Continued Perpetration Of IRS Scams

One local police chief is urging anyone who falls victim to a gift card scam to come forward.

Tom Ceccarelli in Palm Springs says embarrassment is likely keeping folks from reporting the crimes.

"A lot of people are afraid to even call to say they're being scammed. They're a little embarrassed being a victim but we're just getting so many of these still."

The chief says that, many of the scam artists are sophisticated and know how to make their scams seem legit, so there's nothing to be embarrassed about.

While these scams run the gambit, the one involving a phony IRS agent calling continues to be one of the most common.

The caller claims that you owe money and will be arrested if you don't pay up through Red Dot or some other form of gift card.

The IRS says it will never call you to demand immediate payment or threaten to involve law enforcement.
