SARASOTA -- A Republican House member from the Tampa Bay area wants new gun laws following mass shootings in Ohio and Texas.
In a letter to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, 16th district congressman Vern Buchanan asks for an expansion of gun background checks. Buchanan noted that he was one of a handful in the GOP to vote in favor of a bill requiring checks on all gun purchases, including gun shows.
Buchanan also called on Congress to pass a law similar to Florida's "red flag" law, allowing law enforcement to petition a judge to remove a person's firearm rights for 14 days or longer.
Buchanan's district includes parts of Sarasota, Manatee and Hillsborough counties.
